Murcia’s
fishermen pass away many an hour on the beach with their rods
leaning into to the surf and their tackle
cast beyond it in the hopes of landing a big one. However,
held at the Restaurant Costa in Mazarrón.at the annual
dinner of the Asociación de Pescadores Náutico-Deportivo
of Puerto de Mazarrón, the fishermen gathered for a
different occasion. The club is well supported and runs competitions
and events throughout the year all along the Murcia coastline.
Many of these events take place at dusk and through the hours
of darkness when the fish are hungry and more likely to take
the hook. Points are awarded for those fortunate or skilled
enough to land a fish, and these are added to a score sheet
after each event.
The club has a membership of both Spanish and foreign residents
where competitions are enthusiastically fought. Anyone interested
in joining the club should contact Gary Smith for details

It’s
hotting up now in more ways than one with only two more matches
in the Alcalalí Angling Club Spring Series.
This summer
saw the water temperature climbing, near perfect fishing conditions,
the carp getting hungry after spawning and Tony Fowler on
form.
At last
the fish are coming out to play on the Rio Jucar (Zone C1)
and this week saw Tony in the hot seat catching 65.2kg, mainly
on the float feeder method
Thank goodness
he had the foresight to bring two keepnets.
The family
feud is also reaching simmering point with Lorraine Fowler
second with 35.5kg on float feeder, pushing Michael Knight
into third with 32kg.
Fourth
this week was Allan Wilson with 16.6kg, enjoying his day and
getting back into it after a long break.
It looks
as if the places in the series are decided, although Michael
can still catch Tony, and Lorraine will struggle to hold onto
third position if she misses either of the last matches.
All
members thinking about joining us on the bank should contact
Michael Knight (96 280 7244 or Mov 655 533 565) for details
of dates and venues of the next few sessions.
Anglers
of the Costa
–
Planes swoop as Expat fishermen struggle to hook a big one.
Throughout the match several planes scooped water from the
reservoir in an attempt to halt the fires' progress but this
didn't seem to affect the fishing - just making it harder
to concentrate on hitting the bites. The first thing everyone
noticed on arrival at the water was that the landmark tree
stump that has been a reference point for those fishing here
for years had disappeared! Rumour has it that 'Benidorm Market'
Bernard waited for the water level to fall enough to sneak
up in the night to cut it down to retrieve all the snagged
feeders for quick resale (or has his wife run out of curlers?).
With the forecast showers failing to materialise, in spite
of the blustery wind 'up in the water' was the favoured method
on the day with everyone giving it a go but yet again, for
the fourth match running, Tony Fowler with 52.5kg was just
fast enough to again beat Siegbert Grabow (48.12kg) into second
place. The other keen battle was for third spot with George
Holman (25.5kg) taking it by just over a kilo from Ray Benton
(24.4kg) on the next peg. Anyone interested in joining the
club should contact Neil Hawkins on Tel (00 34) 96 283 5245
for information. <<
