Albir Bowlers.
The Albir bowls reports have been off-line for some time but,
better late than never, Telefonica has fin ally come up with the
hardware so I’m hoping to submit regular reports in future.
And to be fair, the timing couldn’t have been better. Albir
this week achieved its first league success since 2005 in winning
the Kings Cup Northern League. The league started well for Albir,
with impressive results against Finca Guila and Bonalba.
The last three games were home to Javea and then away/home to
BBC One, both of whom seemed to be the main challengers for the
title. A 9-3 win at home to Javea was followed by an equally impressive
6-6 draw away to BBC One, which set up a season finale at home
to BBC One. This being the final fixture, both teams knew that
the winner of the league would be determined by the result of
this match – Albir needing to win just one of the four disciplines;
BBC needing all four to edge the league by just two points.
The previous week, at BBC, three of the matches went to the very
wire, with Tony McKenna losing a fantastic singles encounter to
Alex Fisher 21-20. Our pairing of Alan Sharpe & John North
edged a thriller on the last end 15-14 while the Trips of Eddie
Breslin, Anne Mckenna & Geoff Hutchinson also did it at the
death winning 14-13. So the final matches were always going to
be tight, BBC fielded an all-star line-up and had strong grounds
for confidence.
This week, our pairing was unchanged and marched into a commanding
13-4 lead after ten ends only for Maggie Lawley & Yvonne Briden
to storm back, taking a 19-16 lead after sixteen ends. But Alan
& John have a few years experience between them and they took
five over the last two ends to win a classic match 21-19. The
Trips matched was locked at 6-6 after eight ends before a great
take-out shot by skip Geoff Hutchinson secured a six on the 10th
end.
After that the match edged to Albir and despite a spirited come-back
and the away team winning ten of the eighteen ends the home team
took the game 20-14. A cracking result for Eddie Breslin, Anne
Mckenna & Geoff against Carol Walsh, Chris Evans & Clive
English. Jackie Breslin skipped the Rinks team of Barry Rowe,
Margaret Taylor & Barry Hall and they were up against an undefeated
team skipped by Dave Greenhalgh. Despite losing a late five on
the 15th, Albir played solid bowls throughout and put in a great
team performance, coming out 19-13 winners.
The singles match also went to Albir 21-11. So all in all a good
day at the office, beating a team with such strength in depth
as BBC, particularly as they won the 2008/09 Winter League so
impressively, is always going to be difficult, but to win all
four disciplines is a major achievement for Albir. Hopefully this
sets us up nicely for next year’s Winter League particularly
as a few of our new players to next year’s squad played
excellently throughout the Kings Cup season.
As author of this report and captain of the Kings Cup team this
season I would like to express my thanks to everyone at Albir
who federated this season, thus making our achievement possible,
and also for giving everything for the team, your team-mates and
the club shirt. Whilst I prefer not to single out individuals
special recognition should go to the four players who won all
the games they played in – Izzie McCormack, Eileen Whitmore,
Margaret Taylor and super-skip Geoff Hutchinson who played and
won all eight of his matches.
We are always looking for new and experienced bowlers. If you’ve
recently moved to Spain and want a less-strenuous but competitive
challenge or have always wanted to give bowls a go, come along
and try it. Starting to bowl is easy, you don’t have to
commit to a heavy expense and it’s great fun. As you progress
you’ll realise what a test the game offers, it’s mentally
demanding and nail-biting and more like a game of chess at times.
You can participate in the friendly club days, you may even have
the opportunity to play league games for the club, whatever level
you want to play at you won’t be disappointed. Plus there’s
an excellent social scene which is central to everyone’s
enjoyment at the club.
Should you wish to visit this friendly club or obtain further
information on our various membership options then please contact
Jackie or Bridgett on 966 865 300 or by email to jsbtravel@wanadoo.es.
We are situated on the old Albir/Benidorm road between the petrol
station and Camping Excalibur. For those new potential bowlers
out there equipment can be hired. Visiting bowlers are also most
welcome.
